=SANA=

PanAmSat Corp. =SANA=
=SANA=
=SANA=
=SANA=

=SANA=
=SANA=
This Week On Galileo - October 12-18, 1998 Привет всем! Internet... THIS WEEK ON GALILEO October 12-18, 1998 Galileo's sole task this week is to process and transmit to Earth science images stored on the spacecraft's onboard tape recorder. The images were acquired on September 25 by the spacecraft's camera, during Galileo's 3582 kilometer (2226 mile) altitude flyby of Europa, Jupiter's icy moon. Two camera observations are returned to Earth this week. The first is a set of images that look at a region of Europa featuring a prominent strike-slip fault zone and associated ridges and pull-apart fractures. In a strike-slip fault, the blocks of terrain on either side move relative to each other horizontally in a direction along the line of the fault, like the San Andreas fault in California. These faults and their associated features give planetary geologists clues to the stresses within Europa's crust at the time the features were formed. Ridges typically form as a result of compression (pushing together), which is typically oriented perpendicular to the long axis, or strike, of the ridge. Fractures, on the other hand, form as the result of tensional stresses (pulling apart) that crack the brittle crust. These features provide indications that Europa's surface has experienced repeated occurrences of tension and compression throughout its history. The second observations is a single image that captures the Rhiannon crater. Rhiannon is one of only a handful of large impact craters on Europa, which have a variety of forms believed to be related to the thickness of Europa's crust in the region of the impact and/or at the time of the impacts. By comparing Rhiannon's features to those of other craters, scientists should get closer to clarifying this relationship between form and crust thickness, and closer to shedding light on any global-scale differences in crustal thickness and how the thickness has changed over geologic time. STARDUST Status Report October 9, 1998 Ken Atkins STARDUST Project Manager Assembly, Test, and Launch Operations (ATLO) activities: This week's focus has been the series of tests that constitute System Performance Test (SPT) 3 plus fault protection testing, and Sample Return Capsule (SRC) deployment. The SPT mission sequence tests have generally gone very well. These tests verify the flight software appropriately controls all the things the spacecraft is supposed to do during the launch and initial set up in space. As the team proceeds, each phase of the mission must be tested like we will actually fly. These rehearsals are even more crucial for STARDUST than rehearsals are for Broadway shows. We also need to defend ourselves against "Murphy's Laws" ..... I'm sure most of you are familiar with "Mr. Murphy" in your own activities. To get us as "Murphy-Proof" as we can, the spacecraft carries an arsenal of fault protection software so that if anything unusual is detected, the ship will immediately move into a "safe" configuration and "call home." The team ran a series of fault protection tests to validate and/or identify corrections required in the software and procedures. For those following the webcam action, I'm sure you noticed the work going on with the SRC. As you could see, the spacecraft is down on its "horizontal" with the SRC stuck into a plastic box. This is an extra clean box to allow the opening and deployment of the aerogel collector test unit without getting it contaminated. With the delivery of the flight aerogel collector last week, we will be removing the test unit and installing the flight unit next week. You can see the photos of the flight collector in the Photo Gallery Section at: http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov/photo/spacecraft1.html Outreach: The chip with the million-plus names was installed in the SRC. Copies of this and the original chip where installed on the spacecraft. Photo and video coverage was obtained. We should be seeing this "embarking" on the web site soon. I'm not sure the welcoming violin ensemble you get on cruise ships was there, but for all of us it's now "Welcome Aboard!" We'll be doing our readiness review for shipping to the Cape at the end of this month. Вот, свалилось из Internet... 1998 MARS SURVEYOR PROJECT STATUS REPORT October 10, 1998 John McNamee Mars Surveyor 98 Project Manager The 1998 Mars Surveyor orbiter is 2 months from launch and the lander is 2 months plus 24 days from launch. Mars Climate Orbiter Integration and Test The orbiter spacecraft has been fully assembled, checked out functionally, and has successfully completed the environmental test program. The full science payload is integrated and ready for flight. The orbiter arrived at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) via C-17 aircraft on September 11 and moved to the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility (SAEF-2) as planned. Prior to shipment, the Power Distribution and Drive Unit (PDDU) was removed and inspected for cracked glass body diodes and excessive conformal coating. The PDDU was reworked successfully (12 cracked diodes replaced), remated with the orbiter at KSC, and the interface has been reverified. Loading of hydrazine fuel and Nitrogen Textroxide (NTO) oxidizer to the spacecraft is complete. Deep Space Network (DSN) end-to-end compatibility testing using MIL-71 was accomplished successfully. Remaining activities primarily involve conducting mission system tests on the vehicle. Mars Polar Lander Integration and Test The lander spacecraft has been fully assembled, checked out functionally, and has successfully completed the environmental test program. The full science payload is integrated and ready for flight. The lander pre-ship review was conducted successfully on September 15. Subsequently, the decision was made to inspect/rework the lander PDDU and Command and Data Handling (C&DH) box for cracked glass body diodes and excessive conformal coating. The PDDU and C&DH boxes were removed from the lander and the lander was shipped to KSC early on October 1 to take advantage of the electrical down time on the vehicle. The PDDU and C&DH were reworked (2 and 4 cracked diodes discovered, respectively), retested successfully, and reinstalled on the lander spacecraft on October 10. System level reverification activities are in process. For more information on the Mars Surveyor 98 mission, please visit our website at: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msp98/ Hа сегодня все, пока! =SANA=
Jupiter's 'White Ovals' Take Scientists By Storm Привет всем! Douglas Isbell Headquarters, Washington, DC October 14, 1998 (Phone: 202/358-1753) Jane Platt Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA (Phone: 818/354-5011) RELEASE: 98-188 JUPITER'S "WHITE OVALS" TAKE SCIENTISTS BY STORM As powerful hurricanes pummel coastal areas on Earth, NASA space scientists are studying similar giant, swirling storms on distant Jupiter that have combined to spawn a storm as large as Earth itself. Three separate cold storms, called "white ovals" because of their color and egg shapes, have been observed in one band around Jupiter's mid-section for half a century. Two of the storms recently merged to form a larger white oval, according to scientists studying data from NASA's Galileo spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Agency's Infrared Telescope Facility atop Mauna Kea, HI. "The newly merged white oval is the strongest storm in our Solar System, with the exception of Jupiter's 200-year-old 'Great Red Spot' storm," according to Dr. Glenn Orton, senior research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, CA. "This may be the first time humans have ever observed such a large interaction between two storm systems." Each of the white ovals that merged were about two-thirds the diameter of the Earth before the merger, when they combined to form a feature as large as the Earth's disc. Although scientists have observed the end result of the merger of the two white ovals, the actual "collision" took place under cover of darkness while Jupiter was turned away from view. This new, powerful white oval has a mysterious trait, according to Orton. "We can see it, along with the other white ovals, at visible light and some infrared wavelengths, but we cannot see the new white oval at certain infrared wavelengths that peer underneath the storm's upper cloud layers," Orton said. This might mean the storm is in a transition stage, undergoing a rebirth after the merging of the two storms. "With mature white ovals, we can see the upwelling of winds in the center, which in turn leads to downwelling around it," Orton said. The new white oval has a very cold center (about -251 Fahrenheit or -157 Celsius) that is about one degree colder than its surroundings. "Because of this, the oval may have generated a thick cloud system which obscures the downwelling," Orton said, which could explain the new oval's "disappearing act" at some wavelengths. Adding to the mystery is the fact that a nearby storm rotating in the opposite direction to the new white oval used to be warmer than its surrounding. "This probably means that the feature contained mostly downwelling winds," said Orton. However, Galileo's photopolarimeter radiometer instrument showed this feature had cooled down to temperatures that were about the same as its surroundings. Orton suspects that this storm somehow lost power and is no longer spinning as fast or downwelling as strongly as a year ago. This storm was once positioned between the two smaller white ovals that merged, and Orton theorized that when this storm system lost power, it removed the buffering mechanism that kept the two original white ovals apart. Orton and his colleague, Dr. Brendan Fisher, a Caltech postdoctoral fellow at JPL, based their conclusions about the temperatures using data gathered by Galileo on July 20, 1998, during the spacecraft's 17th orbit of Jupiter and its moons. Although much data from the flyby of Europa in that time period was lost because of a problem with the spacecraft's gyroscope, Galileo's photopolarimeter radiometer gathered the new data on the white ovals before the anomaly occurred. The photopolarimeter radiometer measures temperature profiles and energy balance of Jupiter's atmosphere, helping scientists study the huge planet's cloud characteristics and composition. Scientists believe that the bright, visible clouds of the white ovals are composed of ammonia. Galileo has been in orbit around Jupiter and its moons for 2 1/2 years, and is currently in the midst of a two-year mission extension, known as the Galileo Europa Mission. JPL manages the Galileo mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, DC. JPL is a division of Caltech, Pasadena, CA.
